Cancer Mommy

Here you are! Thanks for visiting! This is a place for those of us who have had to battle babies and cancer at the same time, to vent, bond, and ask all kinds of questions.

Parenthood is hard enough, but add cancer treatments in the mix, and things can get downright nuts! We do not discriminate here-- all forms of cancer and mothers are welcome. So, please, check us out and let's hear from you!

There's just a few things you need to do to get started...

Job search and how open should we be?

Is anyone else looking for work? I would imagine a fair amount of you readers are, considering the economy right now. Do any of you ever wonder what you will say to prospective employers when they ask why you've been out of work for a while? Do you worry about whether or not you'll be able to get on their insurance plan? If they even have one.

I quit working part-time in the middle of chemo. It was a joint decision, but mostly my oncologist encouraged me to

Remembering my motivation

My husband sent me this link yesterday. I have absolutely no idea where he finds things online, but this one is so appropriate for me.

For me, while I was in cancer treatment, I was all about living life in the moment, to the fullest I could. I wanted to try new things I was always too afraid to try before, and go places I'd been dreaming of going to. And I did do some of that once my doctors gave me the ok. (Well, we even took the kids to Hawaii after chemo was done, and my oncologist… Continue

Cancer's hold on me

My back hurts. Not like acute pain, but more like I've been hunched over (which I haven't) and it finally just aches. It's been a few weeks now.

Any normal person would chalk it up to being a bit out of shape and needing to get in the gym and lose a few pounds. Not a cancer survivor. What do we automatically think of? Oh shit! It's back and I don't want to tell anyone about this or they might tell me it's back and then I'd have to admit it and face this shit head on again. Am I right?

I have a… Continue

ACS CAN and so can you!

I was invited to participate in our local American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) lobby day. I am not one to jump into that kind of thing, but for some reason felt it could be an exciting thing to try. And after being so disillusioned lately about how politics truly works, it was not an easy decision.

I spent most of my Sunday and Monday (Martin Luther King, Jr. Day) in training for this lobby day. The ACS CAN has certain issu… Continue

Friendships, cancer and gratitude

Friendships are an amazing thing.

I just spent the morning with my neighbor, who, without her, I'm not sure my family would have gotten through the 3 years of breast cancer Hell. Anyhoo, we tend to do alot together, our kids are in the same class at school, and she is right next door. She offered to help me out with the design portion of my Slingflower business. What a gift! I am not very artistic, and she paints for a living. We spent the morning shopping wholesale flower shops deciding on our… Continue

Skiing and good girls

The kids loved ski lessons. Yipee! After all the money and time spent getting them to said lessons, I was a bit concerned that they wouldn't like them and all money and time spent would be wasted. Nope, had a great time. Mommy even got off the bunny slope and made her way to a real ski run. Of course, I did fall a few times, but we all knew that was coming. All in all, a great day on the mountain.

And now another week started. I'm considering sending out resumes this week, as I'm thinking worki… Continue

Weather, going's on and more than you wanted to know

Cold today. High of around 32 degrees. Overcast, which makes me feel so very cold.

My Aunt called today to tell us that she and her husband are going to Maui for their anniversary later this month. Oh, man, that makes me really wish it wasn't 32 degrees and overcast! I cannot wait for warmer weather!

On a good note, my outdoor-adverse kids (at least when it's so cold) have chosen on their own to go out back and shoot some hoops in the driveway. Can we say shocked?! I think hot cocoa is in thei… Continue

Thank God for boring, normal days

My husband came home yesterday and asked the one question I hate him asking-- "What did you do today?" For the longest time after I quit working, I took this question to mean "I need an accounting of what you did to justify my working so hard so you can stay home." That is, of course, not what he meant at all. (Well, maybe some days.) But yesterday I had a guilty feeling when he asked that question. Why? I spent my entire day shopping with my Mom, and spent a good chunk of change on myself (albe… Continue

As a 2x caregiver for loved ones,
I invite you to join Relay For Life and read my Why I RELAY?
I had heard of family members with cancer, but never had to deal with it till Dec. of "98 when my soon to be mother in law was diagnosed with stage 3 lung cancer. I was her daughter since she only had boys and I was the first one marrying into the family, and I was also the one that helped her battle till the end. For 9 years after she lost her battle, I have kept her alive with "I remember when" stori… Continue
