Cancer Mommy

Here you are! Thanks for visiting! This is a place for those of us who have had to battle babies and cancer at the same time, to vent, bond, and ask all kinds of questions.

Parenthood is hard enough, but add cancer treatments in the mix, and things can get downright nuts! We do not discriminate here-- all forms of cancer and mothers are welcome. So, please, check us out and let's hear from you!

Those pesky new BC screening guidelines

I got a call out of the blue the other day from our local chapter of the American Cancer Society (ACS). Those pesky new guidelines for BC screening had just come out the day before, and it seemed there was lots of controversy. This inevitably leads to interest from local reporters, and one needed a local survivor for her story, and would I be interested in talking with her? While I waver daily on whether or not I want to put my face out there as "cancer girl", this time I agreed to talk with her… Continue

Paris, and the neurosis of me and food

I have just had the most amazing trip to Paris! This is just one of over 400 photos we brought back. My husband and I spent 9 days in Paris, with a short trip over to Brussels, Belgium and The Netherlands for a business meeting. We had a great time, saw alot of amazing things, and are now home to rest up. :-) Nothing like walking 10 miles a day… Continue

Oink, Oink!

Well, the flu has hit our home. My son has had a high fever for a few days, and tons of his schoolmates are home sick as well. It is assumed that anyone that has the flu this early has swine flu. No, we're not oinking around here yet. And he's been quite a trooper about the whole thing. Watching lots of A-Team (remember that show from the 80's with Mr. T?) a… Continue

Cancer and your comfort zone

I had a very interesting conversation today with a new friend, K. We were discussing lots of things, just your basic getting to know you stuff. When I mentioned something about my cancer and how I never know when it's appropriate to bring it up to people who don't know, she was surprised to hear… Continue

RIP, Sen Ted Kennedy

I woke up this morning to learn of the passing of Sen Ted Kennedy from a terminal brain tumor. What an amazing career he has had.

This is sad on so many levels. He was the last Kennedy to be in office of any kind in America. (My mother will be most sad at this. She was fascinated with his family.) He seemed to be always fighting for the little guy, even if he wasn't one of them.

He was 77, but he had so much more life to live. He had a younger wife, lovely kids and grandkids, and I'm sure he p… Continue

Is it that time already??

One more week until my kids start school. That's right, BOTH of my kids are going to school ALL DAY this year! (All-day Kindergarten, a blessing from the Gods.) Can you tell I'm a bit excited?

I've been so busy these last few weeks, with all sorts of school related things, that I haven't had much time for anything else. Thankfully, we've been invited to lots of BBQ's, so I didn't have to worry about cooking anything.

I was recruited last year to be on the PFA (Parent Faculty Association) execu… Continue

Has the country gone mad?!

Wow! I cannot believe all the crazy things being said about the healthcare reform bills floating around in Congress. And the "outrage" at all the money that would be spent to fix a small portion of our system. Where was all this outrage during the W years? The so-called conservative Republican spent more money we didn't have than any other President in history. And he got us into a war by lying to everyone, and he even had a shadow government going on. Man, that would cost a pretty penny I'd thi… Continue

My thoughts exactly!

Now this is funny. And all my arguments for those that say socialism is horrible, and we should all be afraid of it.

Heathcare reform can't come soon enough!

Before I had cancer, I was healthy and rarely used medical services, except for giving birth. My husband and I nearly decided on a catastrophic healthcare plan due to monthly costs, and felt it wasn't really a risk for us healthy folk. His business partner talked us into a comprehensive healthcare plan, 3 months before my diagnosis. Thank God for that!

I thought cancer treatment was expensive. Good Lord, I think I was mistaken! Yes, cancer treatment is expensive, and we are so grateful to have… Continue
